The likelihood is, you’ve heard of former boy band member Zayn Malik. In a relatively short period of time he became a household name - a regular reference on the vocabulary of pop cultures most excitable teen fans to its most savvy commentators.

Most recently, Malik has gone from being one fifth of One Direction to credible solo artist somewhat seamlessly. With his debut release, ‘Pillowtalk’ and hit record ‘Mind of Mine’, it’s high-time to acknowledge that Zayn is all about the music, and then some.

Finding his place in a cluttered market of pop printouts, the 23-year-old hasn’t had to do much to craft a style unique from those he may be likened to - he just found the freedom to be himself.

Opening up about this transition to L’Uomo Vogue for the title’s January 2016 edition cover-story, Joe and Co. founder Joe Mills joined esteemed photographer Ellen Von Unwerth, fashion editor Rushka Bergman and make-up artist Sarah Exley.

To create a photo shoot where the art direction gave obvious nods to other such maverick musicians like Billy Idol, Sid Vicious, and Elvis Presley.

Commenting on the art direction, Joe and Co. founder, Joe Mills explains exactly what inspired the look behind the camera:

“Zayn had been growing his hair out and when we met with Ellen we spoke about what she was hoping to get out of the shoot. She wanted something more classic with an edge.

The whole quiff thing had been done before so I wanted to give it a slightly more looser feel, kind of Billy idol and Sid vicious meets Elvis. Zayn needed a cut so once I had completed that I used KEVIN MURPHY to prep and complete the style including texture spray to get the hair to go where I wanted and then added some Hair Resort to really add the feel and texture. Finally finished off with Gritty Business to give it that lived in feel and Session Spray as a final touch.

Although it started off with more structure as the shoot went on the hair started to really come to life.”

In a quote that summarises this new direction best, Zayn explains: “Now that I can really be myself and make music that feels honest to me, it doesn’t feel like work. It really is relaxing to me”.
